Applus+ is performing non-destructive testing at a solar thermal power plant. The scope includes Eddy Current testing on piping systems and heat exchanges.
Eddy Current inspection is one of several NDT methods using the principle of electromagnetism to conduct examinations. Applus+ offers four NDT inspection methods:
Choosing the appropriate NDT inspection method for equipment depends on the tubing’s material and the specific NDT inspection needs. For this scope of work, Applus+ performed Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) inspections and Conventional Eddy Current tube inspections.
Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) is a reliable way to survey ferrous pipes and vessels through their thermal insulation and protective coatings. Applus+’ proprietary system, RTD INCOTEST™ is an excellent option tool for prioritizing corrosion under insulation inspections. PEC supports efficient maintenance operations by screening and prioritizing further inspections and maintenance while eliminating the need for direct access.
The tubing was inspected using conventional eddy current which is an effective technique for assessing the serviceability condition of the tubes, which is used to detect corrosion, pitting, cracking, erosion, and other changes to both the tube’s interior and exterior surfaces. Eddy Current Array is also an efficient and effective option; however, it is only suitable for non-ferrous materials such as stainless steels. Another advanced inspection method available is Near Field Array which is an efficient and effective option for finned tube carbon steel.
Eddy current testing is a specialized NDT method, Applus+’ technicians are certified in accordance with ASNT and are experienced in performing this technique. With Applus+’ support, facility owners and operators are equipped to make informed conditions regarding the maintenance and continued operations of their assets.
As global leaders of Non-destructive testing and inspection services, Applus+ offers a wide range of capabilities to enhance and safeguard operations in the alternative energy market.
